If you can’t make it to St Patrick’s Day in Savannah, check out Oakhurst Village for St Patrick’s Day, Steinbeck’s-style.
Steinbeck’s (659 East Lake Drive, Suite B, Decatur), which was once an oyster bar, draws its namesake from John Steinbeck, Dust Bowl novelist and author of The Pearl. Though they’ve moved on from serving just oysters, if you have any literary bone in your body, or any sense of allegorical irony, this is THE pub to go to during these trying times. With its red brick walls and nostalgic seafaring touches, there’s something very comforting about Steinbeck’s. Being the ultimate neighbourhood drinking joint, it’s the type of place that, if everybody doesn’t already know your name, they will soon. There’s a wide selection of beers on tap, perfect for drowning worries into. Chef Andy Gonzales’ eclectic menu features classic comfort food with a twist as well as exciting, unexpected weekly specials like pork vindaloo.
For St Patrick’s Day, Steinbeck’s will be decked out in green, white, and orange regalia, and you can get your Guinness on as early as 11:30am. There will be a special menu of Gaelic grub, such as house-brined corned beef over twice-roasted potatoes with buttered cabbage and Guinness mustard, along with charred Irish bangers over whipped mash with roasted tomato gravy and arugula salad. Mmm, them’s loving words.
Steinbeck's will also amp up its usual hospitality at 5:00pm with live music, courtesy of Evan and The Boys, and Jimmy Loughlin, part owner and the genuine Irish article. The fun won't stop until you've run out of luck, so get your shamrocks off, honey.
