The President has ushered in a new era of responsibility, and this is just as important for travel as it is for, say, Wall Street. The travel industry has definitely enjoyed a similar 6-year party. Massive resorts have steam-rolled over forests and natural marshlands to cater to tourists with a voracious appetite for the extravagant. But this picture of tourism is becoming outdated in this economy and a new emphasis on green, sustainable ecotourism has emerged.
Ecotourism, though broad in its definition, generally suggests the preservation of natural resources, respect for a country’s culture and political climate, and interactions that are beneficial and enriching to both hosts and travelers. With spring break coming up, break out of the usual party destinations, with their massive hotels and excess, and be a green traveler.
Green Alternative #1: Instead of Cancun, go to Costa Rica.
Cancun, Mexico is known for its giant resorts and MTV-broadcast poolside fiestas, and was once the spring break destination of choice for many an East Coast or Southern student. But rising violence due to rival drug cartel warfare has created a tense atmosphere in Cancun, and its former decadence now seems ostentatious.
For a greener and safer atmosphere, visit Costa Rica instead. Costa Rica is virtually synonymous with ecotourism, and it’s easy to see why. The country boasts ecological gems and is known for its nature preserves. Thick rainforests hold unusual kingdoms of animal, bug, and plant species. From squirrel monkeys to tiny frogs to neon-coloured macaws, there is much to discover and explore. Take a zipline tour of the upper canopy and leave barely even a footprint. Costa Rica’s coastlines offer sparkling black sand beaches and baby sea turtles, the beauty of which will inspire efforts to preserve. Costa Rica is a top destination for volunteerism; if you are so inclined, dedicate your spring break towards giving back. Working with baby sea turtles, helping with a wildlife refuge center, or teaching English are just a few options.
