Regular readers know that I love Biznik, the social networking site for entrepreneurs. Whether you are looking for peer support, customers, education or search engine optimization, you can find it all at Biznik for less than you spend on coffee every month. They even have a free option if your budget is so tight that you already gave up coffee.
I don't know of another business networking site that offers so many online and real-world networking and learning opportunities.
This month Biznik moved out of the founders' house and into office space in Fremont. As a friendly neighbor, I stopped by today to say hello and see how things were going.
Founder Dan McComb was working side-by-side with CTO Andrew Lippert in a bright, airy space overlooking the Center of the Universe. We talked about where Biznik has been and where it is going.
I congratulated Dan on the move and success of Biznik, and instead of tooting his own horn or talking about profits he said that right now "it is not a business opportunity but a business responsibility."
He feels a strong sense of urgency for the 20 million solo entrepreneurs in the US who are struggling to stay in business as well as the "accidental entrepreneurs" who end up consulting or opening a business due to a layoff or lack of job prospects.
Dan imagines the Biznik org chart with the members at the top and his team working for them.
Based on member feedback, one of the new features coming to Biznik is the Groups feature, which will allow people to create and join groups by interest, geography, or industry. The feature will be live to all members on March 1 and give them greater flexibility and control in how they manage their online and offline social networking. If you live outside of Seattle, this will be a great way for you to organize events and people in your area.
Dan and co-founder Lara Eve Feltin have set their sites on a West Coast expansion with emphasis on San Francisco, LA, San Diego, Vancouver and Portand. They are investing in the Biznik site by adding features like Groups, and they hired a CTO with experience piloting planes and commanding missions in the Navy to help them do it.
When Dan says he has a sense of urgency, I believe him.
