Wellness 101: Ayurveda's Chakras
Ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest medical systems on the planet. One of the bases of Ayurveda are the three doshas or energy constitutions.
In Ayurvedic medicine we have seven energy centers located along the spine called chakras. Yoga enthusiasts will recognize this term as it relates to certain poses and postures.
The Seven Chakras
Starting at the bottom of the torso and moving upwards to the top of the head these are the seven chakras:
- Root Chakra - called muladhara the root chakra is located at the perineum, the space between the genitals and anus.
- Sacral Chakra - the svadisthana chakra is found between the pubic bone and the naval.
- Solar Plexus Chakra - the manipura chakra is found near the diaphgram.
- Heart Chakra - anahata chakra is found in the center of the chest.
- Throat Chakra - vishuddi chakra is found within the neck.
- Brow Chakra - the ajna chakra is located between the eyebrows, above the nose, on the forehead.
- Crown Chakra - sahasrara chakra is found just above the head but is often pointed to as the very top of the head.
