Ants are very useful bugs, but they belong outside

There are so many nasty chemicals available at the stores to rid ourselves of bugs. Unfortunately, many of these products are being linked to long-term health conditions and can aggravate existing health conditions, such as asthma.

Loose the Ants, Naturally

Ants are Mother Nature's way of cleaning house. However, when they decide to clean your house it is time to give them the boot!

To simply deter the ants from ever setting up maintenance in your kitchen try some aromatherapy:

  • Ants have an aversion to mint so you can sprinkle crushed mint leaves around their entry points, diffuse mint essential oil in the room or try mopping the floors with hot water and the mint essential oil.
  • Clove oil is also a popular way to deter ants from sticking around. You can add some to a water misting bottle and spray the area the ants have been in so they'll be less interested in coming back.

Still can't get the suckers to leave you alone? Here are some ways to kill the ants without harmful chemicals:

  • Mop the floor and wipe the counters with Borax, commonly found in the laundry detergent aisle Borax is made from boric acid. In certain doses this can kill the ants but I find a thorough mopping of surfaces with hot water and Borax gets the buggers to leave.
  • Create an ant martini by filling an old pie tin with equal parts of water, alcohol and then half as much dish soap. You can also pour it into a spritz bottle and spray the ants with the solution. It will kill them.
