photo APPLE

The beauty of the iPhone/iPod is how easy it is to add on small applications, or apps, that give Apple’s lovely lady extra powers. There are currently more than 50,000 apps — of greatly varying quality — and, surprisingly, many of the best ones are free. But they’re not all fun and games. Now you can also harness your iPhone to help you stay healthy. Here are 5 guaranteed to be worth the time you spend downloading them — and not one costing more than $5.

1. Pocket Therapist

Sometimes you just need a shoulder to cry on. Who knew your iPhone could become your own personal therapist for less than a buck! Atrium Designs has created a customizable psycho doctor app called Pocket Therapist who will listen to your inner most details and cheer you up with motivational advise. Doc listens to your babbling (Pocket Therapist records audio files of you speaking about your feelings) and then gives you feedback about your problems. With just a shake of the iPhone, this charming therapist gives you a dose of friendly advice.  $1.99 from iTunes.

2. AcuPalm

While acupuncture relies on the use of needles to relieve pain, Acupressure is a traditional Chinese medicinal term that relies on pressure alone, much like a massage. Physical pressure is applied to the same acupuncture points, connected throughout the body, which affect specific organs and nerves. Headache, motion sickness, gas? AcuPalm is a natural, easy, and inexpensive way to help sooth your ailments without an expensive trip to the doctor. Just select your symptom on the screen, and AcuPalm will show you the various acupuncture points in your palm.  Not buying it?  Skeptics take note. Acupressure has been used as a medical technique in Asia for over hundreds of years. Its natural way of healing has even been embraced by the AMA and WHO.
$0.99 from iTunes.

3. Eye Test

Have you been squinting to read your iPhone emails? Wonder if you’re colorblind? Nearsighted or farsighted? This program may help you with answers. Simply hold the phone in front of you and try and work out what’s on the screen... though keep it at arm’s length and no cheating. This app will let you know whether or not it’s time for granny glasses. It includes a Snellen chart – with eleven lines of block letters in ever decreasing sizes – among its 33 vision tests. Includes some socket-busting optical illusions, too. $0.99 from iTunes.

4. Lady Biz Period Calendar

Nothing’s scarier than an uninvited visit from your monthly friend. Using discreet graphics, this tracker application for the iPhone allows you to mark your monthly cycle – and predict it more accurately. To the casual onlooker, it looks like a calendar, but subtly keeps track of your cramps, migraines and breakouts. And luckily, Lady Biz is password protected so you don’t have to worry about snooping boyfriends.
$3.99 from iTunes.

5. Fast Food Calorie Counter

Think scarfing down a box of KFC meal is healthy? Does a super sized McDonalds'  French fries count as your veggie source? Open this app and you might hesitate before that quick fix lunch when you see how many calories get dumped into your arteries with every bite. A simple and effective app helps you stay on track with your diet by enabling you to track the calorific value of everything you eat, so you can monitor what you’re eating. On loading it up for the first time you’ll be presented with the logos for 50 fast food restaurant chains. Tapping on the logo will bring you a list of all the foods that place has to offer. Then check out the calories, fat, carbs, protein, and fiber each item offers. It’s not a pretty sight, but if you’re thinking of pulling up to the local drive-thru, then this app might make you think twice. Free from iTunes
