Top government officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning on Friday for the immediate stoppage of use of a popular fat loss and dieting product.
Hydroxycut, a popular Canadian made dieting product has been reportedly linked to at least one death and at least 27 cases of liver problems among users. As more investigation is completed, there may be more cases of illness or injury. Many potential issues may have been unreported thus far.
The supplement industry is not regulated by the FDA. Therefore, unike the drug industry, any supplement manufacturing company does not need to prove that their product is safe or effective before they can sell to consumers. The FDA only steps in when there are reported problems such as illness or death.
In an email from Neal Spruce, the founder of dotFIT LLC, an online fitness and nutrition company, he said, "This is exactly why clubs have partnered with us. We never put the alleged harmful ingredient named in this recall, hydroxycitric acid, in any of our products for this exact potential safety issue and the efficacy evidence was weak, although Hydroxycut is the number one selling fat loss product on the market and hydroxycitric acid is the primary ingredient. Keep in mind it’s also called Garcinia cambogia and I know it’s contained in many other non-dotFIT products. We have committed to always staying ahead of the curve, and by partnering with us, you are ahead of everyone else and you are always right."
