Americas sweetheart took an early exit this evening by losing her 1st round match to Italian player, Roberta Vinci at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
After watching Melanie Oudin practice over the last few days, it was apparent to many that her serve up close is her weakest link. Her 1st round serve statistics show proof of that.
Melanie only won 55% of the points from her 1st serve and only 46% of the points from her second serve.
Her serve return game was not any better. Melanie could only capitalize on 2 of 8 break point opportunities.
For the match out of the 172 points played Oudin won 45% of the points. She had the italian cornered and allowed her to get back in the match and ultimately having a mental block in the third set losing 6-0.
If Melanie wants to compete and become an everyday top performer, matches like this must be a wake up call to make some adjustments to her serve and return game.
We all became huge fans of Melanie Oudin last year with her amazing performances at Wimbledon and the US Open. She was the highlight of the recent Fed Cup. She is a fierce competitor with a heart of a lion. A heart that America needs.
Melanie is still young and hopefully will spend some effort and time developing a more dominating serve bringing it to a -much needed- performing level.
Melanie is an amazing story and an incredible talent and will step it up, dig deep and continue to become a stronger player. With tournaments such as this, players can not afford to come out and not step it up a notch.
