The last time the Man of Steel had his own movie, it was titled “Superman Returns”. Now, the big ironic question is “Will Superman return?” Reports from Thompson on Hollywood say it’s not looking too bright.
This past year, the rights to the character were being fought in court by DC Comics/Warner Bros. and the heirs of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, co-creators of Superman. The decision was made and the rights to this character will return to the families in 2013. Until then, DC and Warner have the freedom to do what they want with this iconic character that has been around since the late thirties.
The problem is they don’t know what they want to do with him. The effects of the lawsuit are still lingering and the creative is far from deciding what direction to take the film franchise. One option is that they follow Christopher Nolan and his formula in making Batman a dark, yet extremely successful, franchise. The concern then is that Superman is not the gloomy character the Caped Crusader is. Superman is a beacon of hope. He is a figure of honesty, honour, and innocence. But, in this day and age, is it realistic enough?
By the time they make a decision, the concern then shifts from creative to the business side of things. How much money do they invest in this character they will eventually have no rights to in not too long? Another concern would be how much time they would have left to make it all possible. So many questions, so little time.
It seems as though this dilemma is far from over. Once a problem is resolved, it looks as though another one arises immediately. It’s almost as if you wish Superman was around to save the day.
