The LA Kings' 1st round (5th overall) choice in this past summer's draft, Brayden Schenn, made his NHL debut tonight versus the Vancouver Canucks. The 6'1'' 192 pound 18 year old was granted 12:31 minutes of ice time, but didn't contribute too much offensively in the 1-3 loss.
Schenn is the younger brother of Toronto Maple Leaf's sophomore defenseman Luke Schenn, the previous year's 5th overall pick. Toronto's general manager Brian Burke was hoping to land his hands on the younger brother, but the Kings beat him to the punch and have already begun to utilize his talents.
Due to an injury of fellow young Kings' prospect, 19-year-old Andrei Loktionov, Brayden received a 1-day amateur contract. He was immediately placed on the second line with Alexander Frolov and captain Dustin Brown.
In his third year with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the Western Hockey League, he's enjoying another solid run as a prime NHL prospect. Despite the short-notice call up, he is expected to return to the Wheat Kings soon.
While he didn't manage to make a big impact in his debut, he did show signs of a young player with confidence and ability to be patient with the puck. Whether or not he plays very much during the rest of the season is still waiting to be seen, but in the mean time we'll keep our eyes on this guy.
