There's a total of 37 US Senate seats going to the voters in the 2010 cycle (including Kennedy's seat). The overall split of present party holders is dems 19, pubs 18. (This is much more of a balanced exposure than 2012: 33 seats up - 23 dems, 9 pubs, 1 independent.) The dems have 16 incumbents seeking reelection; the pubs, 12. Further, the dems have 3 seats held by them that will be (or in Kennedy's case, is) vacant; the pubs, 6. The table below lists every candidate that has filed their paperwork to enter the race, along with links to their campaign sites. The only folks left off are those that have filed but subsequently have publicly stated that they are no longer in the race. This post/URL will be updated throughout the election cycle, so bookmark if you like. We'll add poll data as events warrant. Too early now to be reliable, but note that Bennet (D-CO) (and here) and Dodd (D-CT) appear to be in serious trouble. Reid (D-NV) is in trouble (and here), but you can see below that he has serious money to bus in union folks to vote for him. Concerning Specter (D-PA), although he's up by 8 points, he is way below 50 - always trouble for an incumbent. Another race needing new blood is NY: Pataki beats Gillibrand. Again, this URL will remain constant through the 2010 cycle, so feel free to leave comments so we can develop a history. Any local views are appreciated. Any suggestions for optimizing the information we share here is also appreciated. The current Senate balance is 59 dems (includes 2 independents), 40 pubs, and 1 vacant. Pubs need to get to 51 to control, since Biden (D) can cast his vote to decide a 50-50 split. Maybe the pubs could count on Lieberman changing his caucus? Would then be looking for net 10 seats to control - big bite in 2010, but maybe in two bites - 2012 looks bad for the dems. Perhaps merely neutralizing the Maine pub senators would be enough - so build to 45 and filibuster for two years.
