Wine Examiner

Pacific northwest wines (actually, just Washington State, Oregon is another posting entirely...)

The rural, flat part of Washington is where most of the state's wine regions lie.  The Columbia Valley American Viticultural Area--better known as the AVA--is the largest, covering roughly one-third of the state, eleven million acres.

Reds from the area have proven to be exceptional, right across the board, from merlots (if you've seen Sideways, don't count them out) to syrahs, to pinots, to cabs, to blends.  This speaks well for the region, that this wide array of red grapes can all proliferate to perfection and consistently churn out outstanding wines.  The wines from Washington state run the gamut, price- wise, and parallel top notch California reds at often half the price.

Washington state has in the past been renowned for their noteworthy whites (acclaimed especially for the rieslings from the region) with reds encroaching hot on their heels.  Their pinots are silky; their cabs aren't as huge, more towards medium-bodied; their merlots lush and complex; their syrahs Rhone-style with gamey pepper.

Try a Washington state red (or white, for that matter) and get on board and experience a major up-and-comer wine producing region.
