Although vines are grown in at least a small section of every state in Australia, the main wine grape growing areas are in the south eastern part of the country--along the coasts and in the river basins of Murray and its tributary, the Murrumbigee. Australia's four main states that produce wines are:
- South Australia- This is Australia's top wine-producing state, its vineyards are concentrated in the south east. It accounts for 46% of the country's wine production. The famed Barossa Valley is here where some of the best wines are produced, as well as every-day drinking wines.
- New South Wales- The second largest wine producing state in Australia, it accounts for 34% of production. The home of the Hunter Valley, (north of Sydney) it is the oldest and hottest of the wine-growing states; as well as the irrigated region of Murrumbigee in the west.
- Victoria- This state has more wine-growing regions than any other despite being the smallest and most southerly. It ranks third, with 17% of Australia's wine production. Victoria offers a wide range of wines with ever increasing quality.
- Western Australia- This state accounts for only about 3% of the country's wine production. Vineyards are in the southwest, near Perth (the capital). The climate here varies, but the lack of water is the grower's main concern.
For more info: Australian wines are easy to come by these days, and from my experience always outstanding. Sample a shiraz or a chardonnay, from maybe the Coonawara or the Hunter Valley. They will not disappoint. Check out this very informative video as well.
