Let's be honest - anyone who's actively Online dating isn't particularly interested in profiles without pictures. It's human nature, I suppose. So, which pictures should you use? And, more importantly, which pictures should you lose?
Rule number one
At the very least - you need to include a few recent pictures. I'd say no fewer than two or three. And by recent, I mean taken within the last year. Using pictures from when you were still in college, or were three pant sizes smaller will only backfire on your first date.
Rule number two
There is a time and a place for pictures of cleavage/guys without shirts - and your profile isn't necessarily one of them. Yes, I know you're hot, but if that's all you're using to advertise, well, you're only going to attract certain types of people. I'm not saying don't show off some of your finer assets - but try to limit them to one picture, and use common sense.
Rule number three
Do not take your picture in the bathroom mirror! Don't you have a friend/neighbor/mother who can do that for you?? If you insist on taking pictures of yourself - do it the old-fashioned way until you get it right. And, seriously - please don't post pictures of your car. Or your truck. Or of your gun collection.
Rule number four
Use pictures geared toward striking up a conversation. For example, I used a picture from Halloween when I was a synchronized swimmer - complete with (tasteful) bathing suit, glitter and a flowered swim cap. A picture of you and your dog on top of a mountain - totally acceptable! You surrounded by your 37 cats - not so much.
Just remember to use pictures that are recent and flattering. The brilliant minds at Real Simple even put together a list of tips to help you look great in every photo - including preventing double chins and avoiding fake smiles - so take advantage if you need a little help.
