Perhaps summer is starting to bore the snow sport junkies of Colorado Mountain Towns. Well I discovered the solution to boredom this past weekend, and have decided to pass on one of Summit County’s not so best kept secrets, sailing on Lake Dillon.
The sport of sailing is one I have never really thought about as a true sport, this was due to my ignorance and lack of knowledge about the sport. Strategy, quick thinking and out smarting friend or foe (the wind) are all elements of an exciting and dangerous recreational activity. My horizons were broadened, as well as my vocabulary. I learned words from "port" to "halyard", more slang than the average tween could shake a Jonas Brothers poster at. Being out on the water rather than driving, running or biking alongside it was quite the treat.
Summit County has two marinas, and the mountain lakes are known for unpredictable wind pattern changes, which equals adrenaline and skill. If you are an expert, or know someone who is renting a sailboat and taking her our on Lake Dillon is worth it. Lessons are available at both the Dillon Marina and the Frisco Marina. After a day on the water both marina bars are highly recommended. Frisco has the Island Grill which is famous for their signature Island Sunset, a fruity adult beverage that enhances a day of relaxation. Dillon is host to the Tiki Bar, a local favorite serving up a stiff rum runner and delectible fish tacos.
