The ten finalists have been named in the Curaçao Great Treasure Hunt to be held on the Caribbean island Aug. 23-25.
They are Stephanie Oswald of Atlanta, Sue Anne Howery of McFarland, Wis., Wayne Lehman of Calgary, Michelle Salge of San Jose, Calif., Sabrina Booi of New York, Ron Effa of Bellingham, Wash., Chester Baer of Arlington, Va., Roland Philip of Van Nuys, Calif., Beth Eckhardt of Cleveland, and Carol Brown of Buffalo.
They were selected at random from entries on the curaçaotreasure.com website.
“After months of planning and development, we are excited to finally identify the Treasure Hunt contestants,” says Evita Nita, executive director of the Curaçao Tourism Board. “The Hidden Treasure Campaign was designed to inform travelers about our wonderful island, often described as the Caribbean’s hidden treasure. With nearly 500,000 entries we have exceeded our expectations.”
The inspiration for the treasure hunt was the global recession that struck last year. Curaçao tourism officials decided to offer a “bailout” to American travelers. As part of the effort, one free vacation to the island was given away each day for 70 days.
“With the state of the U.S. economy, our little island offered travelers our version of financial relief while at the same time providing them with the knowledge base to become more familiar with Curaçao,” notes Eugene Rhuggenaath, Curaçao’s commissioner of tourism and economic affairs.
