Though it didn't bring death or much destruction to the United States, former Hurricane Ida caused plenty of problems for cruise operators, particularly Carnival Cruise Lines.
Ida forced Carnival to delay a pair of inaugural sailings today. As reported earlier in this space, Carnival Fantasy was supposed to depart Mobile, Ala. today on its initial cruise from that port, which will be its new home base, but that departure was delayed until tomorrow. The maiden voyage of Carnival Triumph from New Orleans also was postponed by a day. The 2,758-passenger capacity vessel will have its itinerary shortened to three days.
Carnival Triumph will be carrying guests to a variety of Caribbean destinations on cruises ranging from four to seven days.
Ida also forced Carnival to adjust the itineraries of several other ships. Carnival Inspiration had to skip a scheduled port of call in the Cayman Islands because of the storm. Carnival Conquest and Carnival Liberty had to change the dates of some ports of call, but will still visit all of the places on their itineraries.
The storm also disrupted some communications with Carnival ships at sea late last week.
Ida made landfall this morning after making its own cruise through Mobile Bay. It weakened over land and became merely a low-pressure system. However, at 3 p.m. CST, Ida was continuing to bring heavy rains to much of the southeast, from Tuscaloosa, Ala. to Richmond, Va.
Reader reminder: I will be reporting the rest of this week from Manzanillo, Mexico, where the weather hopefully will be calmer. Please check back to see what I'm up to!
