The 2010 Kovels Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide, 42nd edition, is a must read in the industry. Just to know what's going on in antiques, you really have to keep up with the Kovels, or the outer perimeter of what they're saying.

It's no surprise that the folks who invented the antiques & collectibles price guide, (Ralph & Terry Kovel) would know more about antiques  than anyone else in the world. Ralph passed in August of  2008 and left a big hole in the heart of the antiques world.

Fortunately for those of us into antiques, Terry, daughter Kim and her son Lee have stepped up non-stop, to continue to bring the most reliable information on record in the antiques world
This comes as no surprise, neither does the continuity of increased quality, year after year, which means this edition is the best. You'd expect to hear such accolades for a new edition of anything, but with 2010 Kovels Antiques and  price guide, it's always true.
The 2010, 42nd edition of the ACPG has 2,500 colored photographs, 47,000 prices, hundreds of tips all gathered new from actual sales sources.

Many of the photographs in the book were taken by Chloe Kovel, Terry's granddaughter.

The book is  7x10", has 800 pages exactly, and includes a color - code index on the page edges. The book itself has a great color scheme which is easy to read, and easy to find things in.
See the slide show below with photos and prices found in the 42nd ed of the ACPG. At $27.95 it's one of the best buys in the antique world. If you think of your journey in the antiques world as a treasure hunt, then this is your map.

Besides antiques values, you'll find within the pages, hundreds of useful tips on caring for antiques, and a summary of each category with the key dates for the company  or genre being reported on.

From the book:

Revival Furniture

In the years following WWI (1914-18) Americans turned to different revival styles of furniture that sparked memories of the past. Almost every old style - from Windsor chairs, Chippendale chests, and wing chairs to bulky William and Mary dining room sets and Empire pieces- was slightly changed and marketed to the general public at reasonable prices.

When asked about the key to success, she says, "let's face it, I have the best job in the world." She still lights up when talking about her travel and things seen when researching for her work, the enthusiasm translates into all her editions of price and identification guides.

From their honeymoon in Bermuda in 1953, when her and Ralph picked antiques to furnish their modest apartment, to yesterday when she walked in her antique strewn garden, Terry Kovel has surrounded herself with antiques. And she makes the subject a pleasure to listen and learn about.

Besides the ACPG, the Kovels have published Dictionary of Marks, Pottery and Porcelain, which was the first book published in 1953, Kovels Advertising Price list, and many others. There is a total of  98 which includes the 42 editions of The ACPC.
One might speculate, that such a traditional business founded upon antiques, would have clipped wings regarding the Internet. Not so at all.
Not only are the Kovels cranking out the tons of information in print, but also online at www.Kovels.com where there are a great many bonuses at every level, from free to premium subscription member.

And because things are always trending in the antiques world, there's the Kovels Newsletter that you'll want to sign up for, no doubt.

From last weeks newsletter:

Tips on Care and Repairs

EX-SMOKERS, HOLD ON TO YOUR SMOKING COLLECTIBLES

When you quit smoking, keep your tobacciana collectibles. Tobacco stands without the top parts are good plant stands. Cigarette cases are popular as small purses that will hold a credit card, driver's license and a little money. Tobacco tins and boxes are interesting storage containers, and the box labels and cigar bands work well for decoupage projects. Best of all, ashtrays can be used to hold short stemmed flowers or kept in the bedroom to hold earrings and rings overnight.

Post a Komment | Read Others

If there's one thing the Kovels can be as passionate about as antiques, it would be helping others to learn about them and the wit of Terry's unconventional use of some antiques is entertaining and enlightening. I was fortunate enough to have her on the AuctionWally Show again and ask her the following:

  • What are some of the most valuable things the average American is likely to have in their homes?
  • Tell me about some unconventional everyday uses for antique items.
  • What's the worst case of antiques abuse you've ever witnessed?

Listen to the podcast to find out the answers to those questions and hear Terry's opinion on trends, what she's working on now, and her predictions.

Below is a slide show price report of 20 things you'll find among Kovels  2,500 pictured items, which share the book with 47,000 prices.

Edition 42 has one more notable change to those who know what to look for: It's the first edition printed with Terry Kovel and Kim Kovel credited  as the authors.  Good luck on your new chapter ladies.  How apt that the best edition so far, is dedicated to Ralph Kovel.
