They've solidified their standing and at the same time, made way to retro/ vintage collectible glass companies like, Hazel Atlas, Anchor Hocking, The Jeanette Glass co, Pyrex etc.
Which genre to collect is up to you. Some folks will only go with antique glass and others prefer the funky and colorful designs of vintage glass.
There is no right or wrong, but here are some tips:
- Condition is king, very seldom will glassware with any kind of damage command much collector value. One exception is American Brilliant period cut glass.
- Much is unsigned: Famous makers like Fenton, Heisey, Cambridge and others had stock that was signed and stock that was not signed. Many of the big companies had labels that were affixed to the piece and removed by the consumer.
- Be cautious when attributing a maker to a piece. The field is complicated by reproductions and fakes, but also by more legitmate issues. Take this for example, many companies have been purchased by other companies during the years, often these mergers resulted in re-issues of patterns and styles. While these are not the same as fakes or reproductions they are not originals either. My advice here, is to first find out if there is a re-issue, and second is there much of a price difference for the re-issue vs. the original. Believe it or not, sometimes the re-issued item can be worth more.
- Unusual sells: Like other areas of collecting, people are looking for things that are unusual. Different sells.
- Use common sense when dating an item: Often times so much of what I do as an antiques expert is just common sense detective work. Pick up and handle piece of glass. Old pieces should generally have smooth seams, wear on the bottom of the base that comes in contact with shelfs etc. Look for evidence that your "vase" is not acutally a candy dish w/out a lid! Is there an inset ridge there to rest the lid?
We've all heard the story on how depression glass was often used as an incentive in the 1930s to get people to purchase other more expesive products.
The popularity of colors is cyclical. Pink however is usually popular, amber and clear are the least popular. This lovely acid etched fan brought $43.99 on eBay.
