Breed specific legislation is working on hitting a new high in low on Cape Cod. Mashpee voters will vote at their town meeting tomorrow as to whether life can be made a capital offense for new-born pitbull and pitbull cross puppies.
As a follow-on to severe opposition to allowing Brendan Lopes and Tiffany Mendes from bringing their six pitbulls to their new home, their neighbors Carmen and Melissa Shay have petitioned to add a highly restrictive, breed specific law that restricts any pit bull owner from breeding and raising a litter. If puppies are not removed from the town permanently at eight weeks, they are required to be turned into the town kennel for destruction.
As a truly terrible twist, it is illegal for pet shops to sell puppies under the age of eight weeks. Why it should be a requirement for a private dog owner is unfathomable.
When the state is considering laws that punish the deed and not the breed, it is sad to think that good fences cannot make good neighbors in Mashpee, MA.
