A recent Gallup poll revealed that 51% of Americans describe themselves as pro-life concerning abortion. On the opposite side, 42% of Americans are self-described as pro-choice.
The poll marks the first time that pro-life beliefs have surpassed pro-choice beliefs since the question on abortion was first asked in 1995. In 1995, a strong majority of 56% was pro-choice with 33% being pro-life. Since 1995, pro-life views have increasingly become more popular but never broke into the majority until this year.
In a related poll, 70% of Republicans considered themselves pro-life this year: up from 60% last year.
