Among the Republican victors in New Jersey’s election on Tuesday was Gabe Plumer; a 21-year-old undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University.
Plumer won a township committee seat for Alexandria, NJ in Hunterdon County. He won with roughly 66% of the vote against 59-year-old Independent candidate Curtis Schick. There was no Democratic candidate in the election. Plumer’s campaign emphasized three major themes; 1) low taxes and spending, 2) generating more volunteerism and community involvement through community outreach, and 3) increased government transparency and public access to information.
In December, Plumer plans to graduate JHU with a degree in political science with a minor in entrepreneurship and management. On campus Plumer is active with the College Republicans, Student Activities Commission, and some volunteer organizations.
While in office, Plumer wants to increase transparency and community involvement by the use of a town committee website. In an interview via Facebook, Plumer said he wants committee members to use blogs to “provide detailed information on the actions of the Township Committee so that the community can get a better of idea of how their tax dollars are being spent.”
Plumer has had his share of critcs however as fliers have accused him of being a “liberal,” “phony,” and “big spender.” But Plumer remains optimistic, especially with young conservatives who he believes helped put him in office.
“I believe that there are plenty of young conservatives who care just as passionately about the issues facing our country as older conservatives,” Plumer said. “Age should not disqualify you from believing in conservative values and implementing them in government. The Republican Party needs to start actively cultivating a relationship with young people and I hope that my election is a step towards that goal.”
