Governor Martin O’Malley stated Tuesday that the election in New York’s 23rd Congressional District is proof that the Republican Party is divided.
In the New York race, Republican candidate Dierdre Scozzafava dropped out because of a backlash from prominent conservative Republicans such as former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty. Palin, Pawlenty, and others were not happy that Scozzafava was the Republican candidate since she is pro-choice, pro-gay rights, and lacks many conservative credentials. After dropping out of the election, Scozzafava threw her support behind the Democratic candidate Bill Owens instead of the Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman.
O’Malley opined on the New York race to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer:
The Republican Party is a little bit at war with themselves, aren't they? I mean, they've got the right wing of their party and they've got the extreme right wing of their party and you've seen them turn on each other time and again as they figure out what they want to do as a party, let alone what sort of direction they want to lead our country in.
