Dolphins news and views on rookies and starters and Twitter imposters
News and Views on the Dolphins with just more than 100 days from the opener:
- News: Patrick Turner, a 6-foot-5 Dolphins rookie receiver from Southern Cal, has been impressive in the Organized Team Activities, catching a lot of passes while being shadowed by first-rounder Sean Smith a week ago although Smith got better by this week's work.
- View: This is not insignificant, given that after a great practice on Monday this week Smith was “promoted” to first-team cornerback. There has been much blather around South Florida on the need for a go-to receiver and speculating whether Ted Ginn is ready, willing and able. In fact, if the Dolphins have hit this right, Turner may be one of real finds of this draft and be the red-zone go-to guy simply because of his size and ability to run tight routes.
- News: Brandon Frye, another former Virginia Tech player on the Dolphins roster, has momentarily taken the starting right guard position while Donald Thomas rehabs from a torn pectoral muscle.
- View: Frye is an interesting case, the son of former Clemson football and basketball star Stan Rome who played in the NFL as a wide receiver. Frye is a former left tackle with great athleticism for his size. He fits the Dolphins line mold, an ability to play more than one position. Frye is not a given as a starter, but it shows how the Dolphins do their homework around free agents. And it’s another example of having multiple players at a position who are competing for the job, revving up the preparation of everyone.
- News: An “imposter” twittered under quarterback Chad Pennington’s name, forcing Pennington to discuss how he’s not on Twitter or Facebook.
- View: This is the latest example of how ridiculous the mainstream media can be around the lack of understanding about social networking. Of course, the tweets attributed to Pennington were false. There are other examples, chiefly one where the Steelers’ “Ben Roethlisberger” discussed having skin cancer (proven to be false rather quickly) and another where a Tweet claimed to be from Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Ware, saying he was close to a new contract (also false). Most in the MSM would rather write about how ridiculous social networking is rather than dig in and figure out how it can best be used, and that would be cautiously.
- News: Coach Tony Sparano went out of his way Tuesday to praise outside linebacker Matt Roth as being ready to react instinctively now instead of thinking. And he said Roth’s recognition of formations and coverages was outstanding.
- View: Sometimes coaches tell the truth and sometimes they are planting a point of view to rev up and challenge another player. You think Sparano might be trying to send a message to Jason Taylor that if he wants to play more than on passing downs, he better show up healthy, prepared and ready to go? I do. I don’t think Roth is a given as a starter. Sparano’s praise notwithstanding, it’s a long way from June 3 to that Sept. 13 opener in the Georgia Dome against the Atlanta Falcons.
