Dolphins defensive end Randy Starks was arrested and charged with aggravated battery on a police officer, a felony, early Sunday morning, according to Miami Beach police and published reports in South Florida.

The police report says that Starks was driving a slow-moving truck, described by the Sun-Sentinel of South Florida as a black freightliner that included 13 people, including a woman sitting on Starks’ lap as he drove in crawling traffic. The truck is designed to seat four.
The report says Starks struck an officer who tried to stop him in South Beach on Ocean Drive. Starks first kept driving when the officer knocked on the side window, but Starks stopped when the officer hit the side door. But the report further said the truck then accelerated and moved to the left, striking the officer in the chest and pinning him against a vehicle in another lane. Starks also faces a misdemeanor charge for driving a vehicle with a license plate not registered for that vehicle.
He was being held in jail Sunday, according to two reports on a $10,000 bond. He is the latest in a long line of athletes arrested in Miami Beach.
The Dolphins issued no comment through Harvey Greene, Senior Vice President of Media Relations.
Starks is a five-year NFL veteran in his second season with the Dolphins. He was a University of Maryland graduate who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2004. He is the latest in a long line of pro athletes who have run afoul of the Miami Beach police.
All pro sports teams need to have a session informing their hires that an appearance in South Beach can lead to trouble. Check the list below of some notable athletes who have been charged in Miami Beach just in the past five years. It's not all inclusive of those who are celebrities who have faced charges in that locale. And it doesn't include the recent trouble involving Browns receiver Dante Stallworth, who had an accident on the causeway between Miami Beach and Miami that resulted in the death of a pedestrian earlier this year.
