Myself with award-winning HGTV designer Vern Yip

Spotlight } Eye on Design 2009 at Seattle Design Center
Saturday, April 27, 2009

This past weekend, Eye on Design 2009 was presented at Seattle Design Center (SDC), in partnership with Seattle Homes & Lifestyle magazine, who gave complimentary subscriptions to all attendees!  I had the honor of attending as VIP and dragged along (willingly, of course!) my redesign and staging colleague Marlene Rockey of HomeWorks home staging and redesign.

Eye on Design is an annual panel of designers brought together to share design tips and talent with the public and to give the public a chance to visit both public and trade-only showrooms all in one day.  SDC used to hold the panel events 10 years ago, and Marketing Manager Craig Cross saw the need to bring them back, beginning last year with featured guest designer Kenneth Brown of HGTV Redesign.

This year, our guest was award-winning HGTV designer Vern Yip, formerly of Trading Spaces and now of Deserving Design and Design Star.  Vern is delightfully down to earth, accessible., funny, engaging and of course, full of talent!  He is human just like the rest of us - and just to prove that life isn't all glam glamour for him at home, he gave us the insider view of life with 4 adopted dogs, one of which loves to sleep belly up, full spread, on his designer chair!  It was a priceless picture!  As a gal who fosters Animal Talk Rescue kittens, I was touched by Vern's plug for adopting your pets through your local shelter.

In the morning solo panel, Vern talked about affordable design trends, eco-friendly options for design and audience members had a chance to ask their questions to Vern as well.  He also talked about his show Deserving Design, in which every day people who are making a difference for their community receive 2 room makeovers, one of which they know about and one which is a surprise.

I was really touched by Vern's words as he shared the truth of what I aim to share every day with readers and clients alike.  He said:

Design belongs to everybody...It's about improving the quality of life through the qualify of your space.

IMy sentiments exactly.  Small budgets should not dictate one's ability to have an amazing space that provides the supportive and inspirational foundation from which to live our best lives.  Environment can be very impacting on mood, productivity, motivation, inspiration.  Some clients don't even realize how much it has been impacting them until we begin working together and the proverbial light bulb goes on.  As a designer, I seek to bridge the gap between a client's life vision and how their space supports and inspires them towards that.

Come back later this week to learn:

  • Exactly what tips DID Vern share during his morning panel at Eye on Design 2009 and,
  • What unusual and funny design dilemma question did an audience member ask?
