Biodegradable & compostable Palm leaf dinnerware

His & Her Ecopinion*:  Palm leaf dinnerware from Marx Foods

Palm leaf dinnerware is a biodegradable, renewable, and compostable line of disposable paper ware.  They are made from the freshly fallen, naturally discarded sheaths of the Adaka Palm tree leaves which are cleansed, stretched, flattened and molded in a heated press, then sun-dried.  No trees are cut down in the creation of this disposable dinnerware line!

These unique plates and bowls, which come in round and hexagonal shapes, are naturally leak-proof and sturdier than conventional paper plate disposables and are both hot and cold-friendly, without getting soggy or flimsy.  After use, you can throw them away or better yet, compost them!

Marx Foods also sells a line of biodegradable and compostable birch wood cutlery!

She says

I love the concept of this line!  A great use of natural resources, they are attractive and come in interesting shapes as well.  A classy addition to any picnic or event.  Much more interesting than conventional paperware!

The only thing I don't like about these plates are the ridges from the palm leaves...and that is only because I'm a plate scraper so I want every last tastey morsel on my plate!  That's me being really picky though, because it's not that big of an issue.

He says

With spring coming up, so does the time where picnics and barbecues are the preferred weekend meal. Being outdoors with nature is a wonderful time to reflect on how each of the choices that we make as consumers affect the world around us. Fortunately, there can be a happy medium between conservation of resources and ecological convenience: Dinnerware created from pressed Palm leaves from Marx Foods. Plates, bowls and cutlery durable enough for a hot entree and suitable for compost after the event.

Talk about a double win! Throw a potluck at your house or nearby park, and tell your guests to leave the dinnerware to you. They will think that you're a hero when you disclose that not only will you be using a single drop of water to clean up, but that when you host the next event, the table scraps of today will be fertilizing your beautiful garden, just in time for Summer Solstice!
