Better Homes & Gardens

Been dragging your heels on Halloween preparations or just been plain too busy until now? Today I have some great tips for last minute pumpkin designs from one of my favorite resources, Better Homes & Gardens.

Pumpkin Carving Stencils
Tired of the same-ol, same ol' carving designs every year? Check out these printable stencils at BHG for inspiration!

Pumpkin Painting Stencils
Hate the mess and hassel of carving? Grab some paint!  Painting gives you more creative liberty with fine details and you can light up your pumpkin by surrounding it with string lights, mini lanterns or votives.  Check out these design ideas from BHG!

Painting Tips

  • Ideally, use non-toxic acrylic craft or low to no VOC house paint to be more eco-friendly.  If you DO use the crafting acrylics and plan to put your pumpkin out in the rain, you'll need to coat the paint with a protectant which you can get in low to no VOC as well.  The craft stores have protectants but they may not be very eco-friendly.  You may need to hit your paint supply store for the eco-friendly protectant.
  • Watch where you put your painted pumpkins if you light it up with an open flame so fabrics don't light up your night too.

Mix It Up
Combine both carving and painting for a pumpkin extraordinaire like the haunted house above!

Shriveled Pumpkins?
Did you get an early start on your carving and now your carved pumpkins are getting shriveled? Deborah Steilen, Senior Holidays Editor of BHG says "Soak them in a bucket of cool water and drain thoroughly. They should plump back up and look good for Halloween. "
