Romeo + Juliet

Bid spring adieu with a concert of all-romantic selections. Benaroya Hall is putting on a special for two nights entitled Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and will be led by Seattle Symphony Music Director Gerard Schwarz.

Besides selections from Prokofiev’s famous ballet suites, the program will also include Mahler’s Adagio from Symphony No. 10 and a Violin Concerto from the lesser known Russian composer Julius Conus who served as an apprentice to Tchaikovsky.

Most are familiar with the powerful and thundering Montagues and Capulets from Prokofiev’s masterful and widely used accompaniment to the ballet of Romeo and Juliet. Also included are several other pieces such as The Death of Tybalt and Romeo at Juliet’s Tomb. Mahler is another well-known composer who gained in popularity after the use of his music throughout the 1971 film Death in Venice. To round out the musical night, Concertmaster of Seattle Symphony and violin soloist Maria Larionoff will perform Julius Conus’ Violin Concerto Allegro molto—Adagio—Allegro molto—Allegro subito.

The all-romance concert plays for two nights at the S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium in Benaroya Hall. The first show is Thursday, June 4 at 7:30pm and the second is Saturday, June 6 at 8pm. One hour prior to the Thursday show will have a Talk Music speaker discussing Prokofiev and Mahler. Tickets range from $17 to $97.

Hear classical music the way it was meant to be experienced—with a live symphony orchestra at Benaroya Hall.
