Explore the Arboretum at the University of Washington after hours. A special “Park in the Dark” stroll takes visitors through the gardens at twilight.
The Arboretum is home to 10,000 trees, shrubs and vines that keep the gardens green year round. The spring, however, showcases all the vibrant colors of the camellias, azaleas, Japanese cherry trees, magnolias and rhododendrons. With plenty of plant, bird and insect species covering the grounds, there are endless live creatures for kids to inspect.
On warm days, the 0.75-mile Azalea Way is a classic walking and picnicking spot. In the evening though, the shadows cast a different spell over the area turning it into a sunset playground.
“Park in the Dark” is a family friendly outing with games and adventures geared towards families with children K-6. With only a 20 person maximum allowed on the tour, the nighttime exploration becomes very intimate and personalized.
The next outing is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, but there are several more taking place over the summer and fall including the Saturdays of June 27, July 25, August 22, September 26 and October 31. The fee is only $6 per person. Attendees meet at the Graham Visitors Center before beginning their trek through the Arboretum at 8 to 9:30pm.
Everything takes on new personality come nightfall. The sparkling city lights cast a romantic glow over the Arboretum creating an enchanting new experience. Test your senses as you trek through the Arboretum with “Park in the Dark.”
