Going out with a bang, the Seattle Center yearlong celebration of cultures from around the world comes to a close with the Hmong New Year party.
The Hmong people are an Asian ethnic group stemming from the mountainous regions of Southeast Asia including Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Burma as well as southern China. Ancient traditions from the homeland will be brought to Seattle for the Hmong Lunar New Year including storytelling, dance, food, embroidery, flower clothe demonstrations, music and the courtship ritual of ball tossing. In the game of ball tossing adolescents form two separate lines in pairs that are directly facing one another and toss a cloth ball to and fro until one member drops the ball. The opposite player in the pair then receives an ornament, however ornaments can be recovered by the original ball-dropper by singing a love song to the other player.
The theme of this year’s celebration is the Hmong Flower Clothe or “Paj Ntaub” and the special guest will be Mai Xiong, a very popular Hmong singer from Minnesota. A reflection of the year past and the ringing in of the New Year takes place on Saturday, November 7 from 10am to 5pm at Seattle Center for free.
Join the Hmong culture in the finale of the Safeco Festal series as they celebrate new beginnings. The party was so huge last year that they had to find a bigger venue so be prepared for a fun and festive end of the year party.
