For the past several weeks, casting for the upcoming Thor movie from Marvel Studios has been covered in a shroud of rumors as numerous Hollywood heavy-hitters were believed to be up for high profile roles. And, while the Jude Law and Robert DeNiro casting reports have been proven to be false, there is a new report that looks as though it’s going to stick.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar winning actor Anthony Hopkins is in final negotiations to play Odin, father of Thor and ruler of the Norse realm of Asgard. Though not completely official until the ink on the contract has dried, Hopkins will be taking on a role previously rumored to belong to Shakespearean actor Brian Blessed. In the original Marvel comics, Odin, deciding to teach his brash son Thor a lesson in humility, transports the young god into the body of a partially disabled doctor, where he discovered what it meant to be both a hero and a human being. Important to the title character’s mythos, Odin is sure to have a significant role in the film adaptation, helmed by Kenneth Branagh.
If this new bit of casting news pans out, Hopkins will be joining Chris Hemsworth in the title role, along with Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Tom Hiddleston as Thor’s half-brother Loki. Thor is set to begin filming in January of 2010, with a stateside release date of May 20th, 2011.
