A bit of interesting potential casting news for Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming Thor movie has hit the web, with more details to surely come in the following days. According to Ain’t It Cool News, German-born actor Matthias Schweighöfer, familiar to filmgoers as Lieutenant Herber in last year’s Valkyrie stated in the German edition of GQ magazine that not only is he in the running for an undisclosed role in the film from Marvel Studios, but he may be joining a few heavyweights from Hollywood as well.
In the article, Schweighöfer reveals that both Jude Law and Robert DeNiro have signed up to star in the film, but fails to disclose who exactly they will be portraying. Depending how deep into the mythology Branagh is planning to go in the initial adaptation of Marvel’s take on the Norse folklore, Law would be the potential frontrunner to play Balder, close friend of Thor and integral part of the Asgardian pantheon. And since the role of Odin, father of Thor and ruler over the various realms of Asgard has not been filled yet, DeNiro and his unique on-screen presence would be the obvious choice.
If the validity of Schweighöfer’s statements hold true, Law and DeNiro would be joining Chris Hemsworth in the title role, along with Natalie Portman as Jane Foster and Tom Hiddleston as Thor’s half-brother Loki. Thor is set to begin filming in January of 2010, with a stateside release date of May 20th, 2011.
