Corporal Jeremy McLaren, 28 years old, was involved in an accident on Friday night when his police car was hit by another vehicle at an intersection.
McLaren suffered a broken leg which was surgically repaired at Vanderbilt Medical Center on Saturday and was expected to make a full recovery. Some reports even classed the recovery process as being "easy."
However, in a tragic turn of events, the officer passed away. He'd appeared to be recovering well before suddenly dying around noon on Sunday. The cause of his death is yet to be determined but a blood clot is currently suspected.
A family is in mourning, along with the entire Maury county police department, as they deal with the loss of this courageous young man who had spent two years on the force servicing others.
"This is going to be the first line of duty death we have had in the history of our department," Spring Hill Chief John H. Smith told News 2.
McLaren's family was at the hospital Sunday. They've asked for privacy as they deal with their loss.
Chief Smith issued a statement on beahlf of them saying: Our greatest concern is towards the family," he said. "They wanted me to express to the public their thanks for the thoughts and prayers. They really do need them at this time."
My heart goes out to the McLaren family, along with the Maury County police department, and I ask Christians to join me in lifting them up in prayer.
May the Holy Spirit bring comfort to them as they deal with the loss of this loved young man who's life spoke volumes about courage yet ended so unexpectedly.
Father hold them close.
