Accidentally Greek

May 9, 9:55 PM

Today I entered another world within the UW community.

I got a tip from my photographer that some of the ASUW candidates that I might want to interview for an article about the upcoming student government elections, were going to be holding an event on 17th and 45th, an address synonymous for “frat row.” Before I set out I checked the ASUW election website and I didn’t see any information about an event this evening, and so I was wary of setting out to that neck of the woods. Right before I got there I got a call from my photographer, who told me that he just got pelted with a water balloon and his camera got wet, and also, he couldn’t find the person who told him to be there. I said, ok, lets investigate this, as I said to myself, I thought this sounded fishy. So, we start walking up 17th and I hear the party music coming from one of the houses, something about cash money, and its so loud that it sounds like we are in a club, but we are a block away from the source.

I see two girls throwing a football in the front yard of a house, and a little farther on there is a big group of people in the grassy median. It’s a barbeque. And everyone is Greek. I see a girl with a “Vote Dolly for ASUW VP” t-shirt, and eagerly approach her, thinking that she is Dolly, the candidate that I was hoping to talk to. No…but she will be here in a while, I am told. Ok. So me and the photographer stand around looking for our lady, while frat boys and sorority girls pass by with paper plates with hamburgers and potato chips and bottles of vitamin water. This is the point where I realize how pale I am. Everyone is tan. Also, the high temperature for today was only about 58 degrees (thank you Yahoo! weather), and I saw at least three shirtless guys. It was like being on the set of an Abercrombie & Fitch photo shoot. Being an outsider always makes you more aware of your own identity. So, on my way home I went to Buffalo Exchange and bought some cute hip shoes and then fixed my hair into faux
hawk.
