What happens on campus when the sun comes out and the temperature soars above 50 degrees? Everyone is happy! I think the reason that the demand for counselors (Ph.D. or otherwise) is due to the fact that everyone in Seattle suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). I exaggerate. But the effects of some instant Vitamin D are amazing. Walking back from the gym I passed through the HUB (Husky Union Building) Lawnapalooza, which is an all day palooza on the HUB lawn. Wait—what is a palooza? I don’t think I have ever used that word. The number one definition (117 thumbs-up, 23 thumbs-down) on Urban Dictionary is: “A crazy f***in party whose purpose is to re-release an indivivual back into the world of dating when their significant other dumps them, ending a long term relationship.” Wow. I wonder who was dating the lawn. To be honest, this palooza was more of a lawn pic-o-nic, with lots of booths of free things. Yes! I love free give-aways. Today I scored a Frisbee, perfect for the summer, and a bumper sticker for RainyDawg Radio, the student run radio station here at UW. My best friend and roommate’s boyfriend is a DJ on the station, and so I stopped to talk to the people at the RainyDawg booth to see if they knew Aaron and his show, “Aaron’s (Local) Lovefest.” They did. I got home and the first thing that my roommate, Pam, said to me was, “Aaron said you talked to some people from the station.” I was shocked at how quickly news traveled. It also goes to show how if you just stop to talk to someone the chances are that you have some sort of connection through a friend of a friend, and instantly a school as large as UW becomes a little smaller and interconnected. I owe this all to the sun being out.

My dad always says, “It's not where you are, its who you're with.” But at a school of about 40,000 people, where it’s possible to never see the same person on campus more than once, its hard to know who you’re with. So, I’ve... Read More
