The proposal, to add assault rifles to the police cars and slowly phase out the shotguns currently installed in the vehicles, would bring the department up to standard with other PAC 10 schools and according to the PD, better equip officers to deal with armed gunmen. A similar upgrade was considered in 2000, but it fell through due to a lack of student support. Tonight was the last Student Senate meeting of the year and no resolutions on the issue were passed; however, there was a pretty even divide between senators who spoke in favor and those who opposed the plan.
UW student Amanda Knox is still being held in prison in Perugia, Italy, where she has been detained since November as a suspect in the murder of Meredeith Kercher. The case is still unresolved.
