 I’ve often framed today’s environmentalism as a “religion” -- a secular religion for progressive (liberal) ideologues in the environmental movement. Well, in recent years a strange amalgam of progressive religious organizations and “green” activists have leveraged their common social justice and anti-capitalist impulses in yet another nonprofit venture called  the “Progressive Christians Uniting” (PCU). PCU’s mission statement is: “… committed to equipping individuals and congregations for the work of transforming society through the radically inclusive gospel of Jesus Christ.” This is a new “Christian left” group erected as a counterweight to the politically-powerful “Christian right”

In California, the PCU organization is campaigning to make 650,000 acres of the San Gabriel Mountains a “national recreational area.”This mountainous area constitutes about 70% of Los Angeles County's open space. The new “recreational area” designation would carry the wildfire risks, access and commercial prohibitions, and land development restrictions similar to those of the exiting Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area. The proposed “San Gabriel Mountains National Recreational Area” would also draw heavily upon California tax funding of its operations and maintenance.

The PCU organization is, as its above mission statement implies, a transformative and “radically” directed group. Their referenced program initiatives and literature are:
·         Against Union member secret ballots;
·         For African-American reparations;
·         For integration of Native American pagan worship, unreformed Islam and  Buddhism into the Christian faith;
·         For expensive global warming and climate regulations;
·         Against genetic modification of food crops;
·         For big-government social engineering in themes like racial justice, sexual-identity justice, environmental justice, food justice, shelter justice, economic justice, etc.

Add this Christian eco-group to the millions of special interest nonprofit groups that trade the rhetorical virtue of public service for raw political power with our taxpayer subsidies. Irony exhausted… only cynicism remains.
