This last week has been dismal here in Seattle but there are still diehards out riding. While you might not want to do admit it there are going to be a couple of months of long wet rides. If you want to ride comfortably on the wettest days here are the best fenders available right now that you can have your local bike shop install:
Road: Full coverage fenders from either Planet Bike or SKS are the way to go. A little harder to install on newer carbon frames but infinitely modifiable most Seattlites opt for the Planet Bike Cascadia. Made from polycarbonate they have the best weight to durability record of any fender. There is on other option everyone wants to try this year, the CRUD Road Fender, but the company has been having supply issues. Maybe a change in their luck will land a few of them in the US before spring! The CRUD is the closest you will want to get to a detachable fender but if you can't get full coverage my two favorite fender makers have similar options.
City: Since when do fenders have to look bad? There is no excuse for a great looking swept bar town bike to have plastic hanging over its wheels. The Tanaka or Honjo metal fenders are great options if they look good on your bike. Installation is a little tricky with some drilling involved but they are the best attention grabber in any situation. If you don't want the weight of metal the best option has to be wood. Woody's down in Bend makes some of the prettiest and most affordable. Most aficionados agree that the bikes from the Oregon Manifest had the best looking fender installations ever seen on town bikes and you can only hope that your fenders look as good.
Do what you can but no matter what you do: go get some fenders and get out and ride!
