If you've never been to downtown Mt. Clemens, or if it's been a while, this weekend would be a great time to make the trip.
The 2009 Stars & Stripes Festival inhabits the entire downtown area of Mt. Clemens with multiple stages featuring great musical acts and countless activities, food and drink. The fun begins Friday and runs through Sunday (June 26-28) and features such headlining acts as Morris Day and the Time, Edgar Winter, Uncle Kracker, Ratt and many other local and national acts. There is even an after-party on Sunday night featuring LA Guns at the popular Emerald Theatre. The best news: it's all FREE!
Downtown Mt. Clemens is a wonderful business community with an eclectic mix of retail stores, incredible restaurants, coffee shops and more. And the really encouraging thing about this vibrant area is that there are less building vacancies and "For Lease" signs than you'll find in your average strip mall. I'm not sure why it's such a well kept secret, but if you make the trek to this patriotic festival, you'll surely help spread the word.
This festival, one of more than 30 events held in downtown Mt. Clemens each year, is easily accessible from every direction (I-94, I-696, M-59, Metropolitan Parkway) and lies only 20 miles northeast of downtown Detroit.
The biggest problem you will have when you attend the Stars & Stripes Festival is trying to juggle your schedule to see as many acts as you can. Last year, in two separate trips to the festival, I managed to see Grand Funk, the Romantics, Marshall Crenshaw, Sponge and the Orbitsuns. Aside from a couple of beverages and an delicious dinner at Luigi's (ya gotta try their lamb chops), I spent a total of nothing.
There is something for everyone at this festival including a Family Fun Zone which features a petting zoo, bungee trampolines, a rock wall, carnival rides, motorcycle and bicycle stunt performances and much more.
Everyone should support their local communities. Especially if it's free.
