David Letterman, who last night admitted to his wife, mother and America that he had had sex with female employees, helped police nab the man who was allegedly demanding 2 million dollars to keep the story quiet.
Letterman explained the entire story on the air last night to a stunned crowd and then difused the tension by joking, "I know what you're saying, 'I'll be darned, Dave's had sex."
Letterman went public with the story and exposed the sex scandal only after going to the authorities and working with the police on a sting operation. The suspected extortionist, Joe Halderman, a producer for CBS, is being held on $200,000 bond and could face up to 15 years in prison for blackmailing the late night host.
One of the women believed to be involved, Stephanie Birkitt, a long-time Letterman assistant, is probably best remembered as the young intern who would run down the aisle with the prizes when Dave was conducting contests during his show. She is said to have recently lived with Halderman.
