Most people do dead lifts bending their knees while lifting up. However, by doing the routine while keeping your legs stiff, you will shift pressure from your quads to your hamstrings. This is an often overlooked workout, even among gym rats. Building your lower back and hamstrings are certainly not as glamorous as your chest or biceps. None the less, it's still one of the best excercises. In all my gym years, I've never had to wear a back belt doing squats, and I squat up to 10 reps of 400 pounds. The reason I've never had to wear a back belt is because I've always done dead lifts. Dead lifts are also great for working out your lats and obliques, definately an excercise you want in your routine if it's not already there.
