Yes, you can keep your six pack and build muscle. However, it is extremely difficult and you almost need to hire a nutritionist to do it. Evander Holyfield put on 12 pounds of muscle for his second fight with Riddick Bowe, and was just as chiseled as before. The important thing to remember is, he had someone monitoring everything he put in his body and adjustments were made as his body chemistry changed.
Most people who train a lot and are obese, have only a poor diet to blame. However, most bodybuilders become obese in the off season on purpose because it is the best and easiest way to put on muscle.
For most people I recommend biting the bullet, eat a lot of meat and extra calories while training hard for 3 to 6 months. Once you have completed the mass gaining cycle, chisel off the fat by cutting your carbs to 100 grams or less per day. Unless you have a lot of money to hire a professional dietician, don't expect much muscle growth unless you up your calories a lot.
A final note to everyone. Whether you want to look like a movie star, professional athlete, or bodybuilder, your body was not designed to look as such naturally. Your body is going to fight you every step of the way by adjusting to what you are doing. Doing the same thing gets monotonous and your body adapts. In order to keep changing your look, you need to keep shocking your body and changing your routine.
