It might be an overstatement to equate a military tech event with the annual Consumer Electronics Show, but in terms of dollars spent it really isn't. The Consumer Electronics Association pegs consumer electronics spending at $172 billion for 2009. That sounds like a lot, but the fact is that's basically what the Pentagon spends on its cell phone bills.
So military technology is becoming increasingly important.
Next week there will be decent show, the Military and AeroSpace Electronics Forum, out in San Diego. A quick look ahead shows what is hot in military tech.
A company called VI Chip is hyping a simply ridiculously durable solid-state battery set. The technology creates a flexible and tiny power system that produces DC in things that get shot at, rumble around or otherwise get roughed up.
Durable rack mounts are also interesting. Check out what a company called SprayCool is doing with rugged rack mounts. No computer gets hurt in this baby.
Check out what Parvus is doing with a neat looking, if crazy big, wearable wireless computer. This thing bolts on your wrist and gives you the wireless connection with a WLAN, BlueTooth, Zigbee or similar radio-based digital technology.
Besides being cool in its own right, the Hummer effect is in play. With a bit of consumer TLC, this stuff could be tweaked up and in a Best Buy pretty darn soon. How cool would it be to have some domestic technology companies again?
