The best sailor in the world is most often seen leading a pack of boats.

We have all raced against this guy.  He shows up at most events.  You will most often see his name at the top of the leaderboard.  The easiest way to identify his boat is by looking at the transom, in fact, you've never seen the front of his boat.  He is the Best Sailor in the World and it's important to be able to identify him.

The guy isn't always a guy.  The Best Sailor in the World seems to be in many places at once.  The only thing consistent about him is that he is always winning.  He's always on the right side of a shift.  And you're probably tired of staring at his transom.  It would help if you knew what you were looking for.  Basically a way to identify this guy, this Best Sailor in the World.

Identifying characteristics of the Best Sailor in the World:

  • He doesn't call wind shifts, the wind calls him asking which direction to come from.
  • He is ALWAYS on starboard even when port tacking the start.
  • He used to do foredeck on a J105 and nobody makes fun of him.
  • He uses the word barberhauler in conversation and *everybody* knows what he means.
  • He doesn't beat into the wind, he beats the wind.
  • He is the "L" in DTL (distance to leader in other races).
  • He is always at the anchorage first and his beer is always cold.
  • He can make a 4 knot s-box go 5 knots.

There are a few candidates for Best Sailor in the World, people that we all know and love from the world of sailing.  Terry Hutchinson is in the mix.  Many people think Russell Coutts is the Man.  Scot Tempesta might be on the short list.  There also may be a lot of them.  Maybe it's you and you didn't realize it (see if the list above applies to you).

If you see the Best Sailor in the World out on the water, be sure to track him down and find out how he does it.   Maybe the next article can be on "How to be the Best Sailor in the World."

Alternate stories: Please use the cut and paste option on your keyboard to copy this story to a text editor.  Use the find and replace functionality to replace all instances of him/he/his to her/she/hers or Hutch/Hutch/Hutch's.  And please click on Scot Tempesta's name, it makes this story much funnier.
