For more families, visiting Orlando in the summer is not their first choice, though there is nothing wrong if it is. Rather, it is the time they must visit the city, simply because that's when the kids have a break from school. For those visiting in the summer, there are some things to consider to protect yourself from the sun and heat.
First, use sunscreen. The higher SPF the better. This is especially true for a child's delicate skin, which can burn relatively quickly. Sunscreen should be used any time you are outdoors an extended period of time. This includes time at the pool, the theme parks and the beaches, even if it is a cloudy day.
Second, do not forget the rain gear, such as ponchos and umbrellas. While Florida may be The Sunshine State, it is also the lightning capital of the world. That means storms come violently and often -- and the summer is the rainy season.
Third, expect long days. Theme parks in Florida stay open extended hours, which is very helpful because of the larger crowds. But make sure you get plenty of sleep and try to pace yourself throughout the day.
Finally, bring plenty of water. Do not simply depend on water fountains, no matter how prevalent they may be. Take a water bottle and keep it filled. Also do not wait until you are thirsty to drink.
