The Sabathia Effect

CC Sabathia

Milwaukee Brewers new starting Pitcher C.C. Sabathia smiles as he talks at a news conference Monday, July 7, 2008, in Milwaukee. The Brewers obtained the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner in a trade with the Cleveland Indians on Monday, giving up four prospects in a gamble that favors the present over the future. The trade of CC Sabathia to the Brewers is being hailed as a bold move by Milwaukee.  It should be noted, however, that Sabathia's contribution, at first glance, may not be that big.  In my latest column at SportingNews.com, I calculate how many wins Sabathia will save over one of the Brewers' poorer starters, Jeff Suppan.  It turns out, if CC maintains the ERA he's posted since the start of 2007, he'll earn the Brewers two more wins.

Two wins doesn't sound like a lot, but two more wins in 2007 would have tied Chicago for the NL Central lead.  If he can get his ERA in the low threes, like Haren and Santana, he should earn the Brewers three more Ws.  The quest starts tonight as he faces the Rockies with Mark Redman on the mound.  Red man hasn't pitched well this season, giving CC a good shot at his first win.
