“He just shot right out in front of the Buick, went over the windshield and ended up in the path of the bus" said Furtado.

One student's life will never be the same again. 15-year-old Justin Charron, a student at Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School in Fall River, was seriously injured as he was riding his bike in traffic on Tuesday.

The Somerset boy was not wearing his helmet and was listening to his iPod before he was hit by a Buick and a school bus. Even though Charron was harmed, "Swansea police Deputy Chief Robert Furtado said it is unlikely the two drivers will face charges." Nevertheless, the accident is still being investigated.

Bike Safety Tips:

  • wear a bright colored helmet
  • add neon colors to the bike
  • choose a helmet that has good ventilation
  • always fasten the strap of the helmet
  • make sure the helmet is covering your forehead
  • always inspect the bike for defects
  • stay away from road hazards such as potholes, dogs, and broken glass

Parents should teach their children these safety tips because about 300,000 children end up in the emergency room each year because of bicycle accidents. No parent wants to see his or her child suffer a brain injury or broken limbs because of a preventable bike incident.
