Despite the thousands of species known in the world it is good to know that new species are being discovered. Dr. Andrew Marshall of the University of York’s Environmental Department has recently discovered a new species of chameleon while in the Magombera Forest in Tanzania.
This species, named Kinyongia magomberae or the Magombera chameleon, is found in only a small area and, unfortunately, is under threat. It is much easier to inadvertently wipe out a species that is concentrated like this species is. Dr. Marshall hopes that “this discovery will support efforts to provide this area and others like it with greater protection.” The Magombera Forest is a vitally important resource for many species including the people who live around it.
Dr. Marshall’s coauthors are from the Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali, the South African National Biodiversity Institute, Anglia Ruskin University and the University of Stellenbosch. Their findings were reported in the African Journal of Herpetology, volume 58(2). Dr. Marshall had been in Tanzania to study the rare monkey’s that can be found in the area.
