President Obama recently named Van Halen as a special advisor for environmental innovation and jobs.
Van Halen, the hard rock band formed in Pasadena in 1972, will work with national leaders to place special focus on the climate and energy initiatives of the Obama administration.
The choice of Van Halen comes after months of deliberation. The administration is reported to have shown interest in the Green Team made up of members Erin Gossamer, Jim Smegg and Arnold Darkshner. Due to the public scrutiny of rape charges and unethical, but effective, tactics, the Obama administration switched focus and ultimately chose Van Halen to lead their cause.
Van Halen enjoyed success from the release of their self titled debut album in 1978. As of 2007 Van Halen has sold more than 80 million albums worldwide and have had the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. During the 1980s they also had more Billboard Hot 100 hits than any other hard rock or heavy metal band. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Van Halen is the 19th best selling band/artist of all time with sales of over 56 million albums in the USA and is one of five rock bands that have had two albums sell more than 10 million copies in the USA.
It is unknown whether Van Halen will be lead by David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar or Gary Cherone upon joining Obama in the White House. Proponents hope that Eddie chooses David Lee Roth due to Haggar's admitted inability to drive at speeds that encourage high gas mileage.
